How it all began..
Our Managing Director was invited to teach a City and Guilds IT
Practitioners and "Train the Trainer" course at the Southwest Resource
Centre in Ogun State, Nigeria and it became apparent that the company that
was contracted to teach the course had not really prepared properly and
where unable to deliver what was promised. He was able to convince them to
let him register the 55 students on the IT Essentials I course as an
extension of HBC Academy.
The results were excellent; we had a 100% pass rate. The lowest pass mark
was 81.1%. All this with only 25 computers on which to read the curriculum
and these computers were also the ones that were taken apart for the
practical labs. He was impressed by the hunger and determination of the
students of Ogun state and when they all asked me how HBCA could help them
progress further he began to look into the possibility of helping the state
set up some academies.
We began to research a bit about Nigeria and what was available and quickly
realised that it was a country in desperate need of the Cisco Networking
Academy Program. We found that IT training companies there were offering
CCNA "lectures" for the equivalent of 1 or 2 years salary for the average
person and felt that it unacceptable, even prejudice, a typical case of the
"haves and the have nots".
Our MD was given an award of excellence by the YYC, a national, political
youth organisation for his contribution to the Yoruba Youth. he said;
"I must admit, I was almost embarrassed at receiving this as although I knew
that I had made a tremendous impact on the lives of the students, I had done
nothing unusual, just taught as I would back home. Since returning home, I
have been swamped with emails of gratitude and thanks, saying things like "
I am living what you taught us" and one email in particular was from a man
that told me that "when he came on the course he felt he had no future but
after spending the time learning, not only the technical skills but also
being inspired by the style of teaching, he now felt that the sky was the
limit". I was very moved and proud to have had such an impact and it
inspired me even further to try to do more to help."
So far we have established 5 local Cisco Academies in Nigeria are in the
process of helping to establish more.
HBCA under our corporate trading arm,
BlueChip Training and
Consultancy are in process of proposing and delivering many more
dynamic, affective and socially relevant projects in Nigeria and other parts
of Africa.
